A Note from the Chef
Let’s take something that’s been around for years, loved by all – regardless of ethnicity or diversity; rich or poor, young or old; is inherently democratic because everyone gets a vote on how they want it to be; is meant to be shared so it’s socially conscious; and what do we have…
Pizza
With pizza there’s room for every taste, and its crispy crust is the perfect platform for self-expression. The traditionalist can sit at the same table with the eccentric and nobody cares or tries to talk them out of enjoying their slice.
I don’t know if you’ve ever thought that pizza had anything profound to teach you. Most of us just love eating it.
For those of you who are relatively new to my posts, you may not know that I tend to philosophize now and again. As I explain in the side bar, I come from a long line of philosophers and storytellers. The kitchen, was the campfire (sometimes literally) for generations in my Italian family.
Why are we building all those outdoor ovens if not to make pizza? It”s even the star of the party…”Hey, I’m making pizza tonight. What to come to dinner?” Heck yeah!
And why else would we have fire pits with seating around them, but to tell our stories?
Certain habits are hard to break. And when they’re good ones, we reinvent them to suit us. This need to gather and be social, in particular, sticks around because it fills our need as people to connect to each other. And what’s a great way to do that?
We prepare and share pizza.
Last night I developed my own concoction. Vary the sauce and topping all you want…but I’m sure you’ll love how this timeless and universal favorite can still be taught a new trick or two…
Click here for my Summer ’13 favorite – a thin crust, with a sautéed topping of fresh zucchini, tomatoes and sweet caramelized onions. Yum, yum, yum.
And soon to come…my gluten free version.

Love it! You are totally right- pizza is democratic. You should see pizza night in my house. It’s never “pepperoni/mushroom” pizza night, there is every topping you can imagine so that everyone can pick and choose :) Leftovers get thrown in a stirfry, easy peasy.
Your photos always make me so hungry! What’s not to love about pizza? There’s always a palpable excitement in the air when I declare it pizza night – and I find it’s a great way to get the kids to eat their vegetables. Love this summer pizza recipe – definitely trying it out soon!
Fantastic. i love your philosophy on how food, in this case pizza, brings us together.
Yumm, that look so yummy and I love what you said about pizza bringing people together. It’s so true, i love getting together with friends, especially when food is involved!! ;-)
